Brief Profile

  • Senior Consultant since February 2007 in Indian Council of Research for International Economic Relations (ICRIER), an economic policy think tank based in New Delhi that was established in 1981.

  • Deputy Chief (Operations) and Senior Adviser (Macroeconomics) at State Fiscal REFORM Project, USAID/India, New Delhi from November 2005 to February 2007.

  • Head of Research in ICICI Bank and erstwhile ICICI Ltd during May 1995 to June 2002.

  • Editor of International Journal of Development Banking (IJDB), Mumbai from 1997 to 2000.

  • Served as Deputy Economic Adviser, Ministry of Finance, Government of India during October 1990 to April 2005.

  • Member of Board of Directors of Tolani Shipping Company Ltd. (Corporate Office: Mumbai) during 1995-2003 and Aarvee Denims Ltd. (Corporate Office: Ahmedabad) during 1995-2000.

  • Member of Task Force on Data Reporting System for Financial Institutions for the Report of the Working Group on Money Supply, Reserve Bank of India, Mumbai, June 1998.

  • Member of Working Group on “Reforms in Deposit Insurance in India” which submitted its report to Reserve Bank of India in October 1999.

  • Member of the Sub-Group on Household Saving for the Tenth Five Year Plan which submitted its report in June 2001

  • Completed M Phil (Economic Development) in 1986 and Ph D (Economics) in 1989 from University of Glasgow, UK.

  • Won Indian Exim Bank International Trade Research Award (ITRA)-1993 for the Ph D thesis entitled ‘ Exchange Rate Regimes of Less Developed Countries: The Case of India’.

  • Dr. Mathew’s research interests include financial sector, public debt management, industry, open-economy macroeconomics and regional development.
